Pictured here are two gentlemen from an advertisement for the Midland Railway Company's Ready Made Farms in the 1910s. We added the tree and star but you can see the advertisement in its original form here.
John and Louisa Rooke were among those who purchased a Ready Made Farm and then travelled across the world with their children to start a new life. After leaving their home in Cardiff, Wales they arrived in Carnamah, Western Australia in late 1915. Their daughter Madge many years later remarked:
I don’t remember the actual arrival, but it was getting on for Christmas and it didn't seem right to be hot weather at Christmas time. We tried to decorate the house with the beautiful orange flowered Xmas Bush, but when we got it inside, swarms of ants rushed out of the flowers and we had to get it outside quick smart. We had no fly wire on doors or windows and of course fly spray had not been invented so we just had to cover everything with mosquito netting and wave while we ate.
2013 has been another big year and as it draws to a close we'd like to take the opportunity of wishing one and all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
